The Toe Up Sock Exercise-Update

The toe-first technique was new to me but then I had to learn a new heel version too. I liked both of these and just want to change a few things.

Short rows, wrapping and turning formed the heel shape. But I am used to making a heel with reinforcing stitches, like those below.
Those reinforcing stitches prevent wear at the back of the heel. I'll have to figure out how to bring those slip stitches into this new kind of heel.
All of these lessons came from Wendy D. Johnson's great tutorial on Knitty.com

I changed color on the foot, because I started with just enough yarn for two toes, and no more. Koigu, KPPPM.

So this morning in my dissatisfaction with the previous heel decided to try it with garter stitch instead. I looked for a contrasting yarn and found this heavier red superwash. Using it made it easier to see the wraps that needed to be picked up.

I knit in bed...don't you?

You can try using wooly nylon to reinforce the heel. It is supposed to help.

Wendy has a method for the reinforced heel you like, but from the toe-up. Check her website.

I thought about trying to knit my next socks from toe-up, but when I saw the heel I am not so sure to do it. I knitted already this kind of heel (not toe-up) and I don´t like to wear it. In Germany we call this kind of heel boomerang heel.

It is toe up but has a slip stitch heel. I knit practically everywhere but in bed.

Thank you very much, Paula. The heel looks great; I guess it could be also knitted with reinforcedstitches.

I have often heard that reinforcing stitches are needed at the back of the heel too. However, in practice, I find that I wear out my socks on the ball of my foot just below my toes first. Since the heel isn't my problem, I prefer the short row heel best as it fits well in my shoes. You might consider whether you really need that reinforced heel.

    Love your blog, Mel!
