Films We Liked, Loved and Loathed
Although it looks like the writer's strike may be nearing an end, there is still woefully little of interest on TV so we are renting a lot, I say A LOT of films. And some are worth recommending and others are worth a warning against.
Mad Hot Ballroom Competitive Ballroom dancing with grade school kids. Funny, absorbing, and so adorable.
Sketches of Frank Gehry Architect of Incredible designs and an inside look at how Gehry gets his ideas.
Kinky Boots Not what you think, story of a resurrected shoe factory making boots for drag queens.
Hollywoodland The fictionalized account of Superman's death. Ben Affleck resurrects his own career in this film noir.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Blades of Glory Both totally stupid films which we feel guilty about loving and quoting lines from. Sacha Baron Cohen ( Borat) plays a French race car driver and Dave continues to channel him
Amazing Grace Disappointing and dragged out historic reenactment of abolition in Great Britain, dull as dirt.
Notes on a Scandal Superior acting, and challenging themes, Judi Dench is superb and so is Cate Blanchette
Once Sweet, unpredictable and lovely. With music by the actors.
Knocked Up Honestly I didn't expect to love this movie, yet it was super, and funny, very funny.
Children of Men Science fiction of the dreadful future, with Clive Owen, always worth watching.
Croupier Speaking of Clive Owen, this is his breakout film, excellent.
Casino Royale I have stayed away from Bond films for a while but decided to try this one and was amply rewarded. Amazing stunts, thrills and romance. Bond is back, blond and blue eyed.
Waitress Pie! I wanted to just leave it at that, but really this is so good. Have another slice.
The Feast of Love Morgan Freeman, Greg Kinnear and young beautiful newcomers make this sweet, sad and ultimately wonderful film my top pick. Gotta rent this one.

Thanks so much for your movie reviews! I've gone through all the law and order that I can stomach at this time (they're better in bits rather than all day to me) and I've been walking around Block Buster in a stuper trying to pick out movies because I thought I'd seen them all. You mention several I'd passed up, so I'll give them a shot! Hope this gets us through the strike! We might have to turn off the television and talk to each other.

  3. I love movies like Kinky Boots.. of course I love British movies, because they aren't as predictable. Loved Children of Men, didn't like Amazing Grace.. I, too, was embarrassed that I loved Talladega Nights as much as I did. I am watching Across the Universe today. It should be interesting... I love Julie Taymor... she did Lion King on Broadway. I'll let you know how it is.
Thanks for the ideas... now to Blockbuster online.

While Children of Men, the movie, was a bleak look at the future, I highly recommend the book of the same title by P.D. James. Same story, but your imagination can do a bit better with the settings.

  7. Have you guys rented Prime yet? I got it shortly after I got back and loved it - Meryl Streep is especially good in this one.
And I see the new picture of your driveway on your sidebar and feel like we are walking down to the mailbox (Yolanda and who?) to see if there are any movies there.

  8. Agreed with every one until I got to The Feast of Love--never heard of it. So I just ordered it from Netflix. I don't think I can go wrong with your review! Wasn't Amazing Grace a snooze? We gave up and sent it back before we finished it. We never do that.

  10. Wow! Your blog now has movie reviews. Fabulous! I haven't watched TV for at least 10-15 years, but just joined NetFlix about 6 months ago. One movie every weekend keeps me entertained, so I appreciate the suggestions.

Just watched Ratatouille (sp?) last night. It was truly delightful for this old crone. Highly recommend it.

  11. Nice pithy reviews! I read about Once on Terry's blog a while back, ordered it and reallly enjoyed it. I've never even heard of Feast of Love, so I'll add that next. Have you seen Saving Grace (the movie)? And a friend recommended Never Again, quirky and funny.
