Inspired by Strips

Artist Erin Wilson made this wonderful piece, and I have kept it in my files since last March when I saw it in a magazine at the Hudson Valley Art Quilt Workshop. The colors, the simplicity and the layout all intrigued me. I showed it to my students and vroom! lots of wonderful quilts started happening. Nothing I taught produced such a flurry of great work. So what I think this means is that sometime you just have to see the finished work to get the concept of SIMPLICITY.

Early yesterday morning I was emailing Robin Ferrier and happened to visit her blog and then followed a few of her sidebar links to this discover this wonderful quilt made by Kristin Gann. OOooooohhh. Again it hit me. I need to make a quilt with just strips.

So I did. Strips and blocks made from strips, and then long strings of strips and combinations of strips and frames.

Nothing is designed yet from these 'ingredients' but I can tell you that I am diving right back into the color pool today. This is way fun.

What fun! Mel - when you work with just strips like this... do you still just fuse to background batt or do you sew them together....???

  3. I fuse them together as a top and then when that is done the whole thing gets fused to batting.
