Diane, Wanda and Tiramisu

Last year Diane, our blog ringleader posted a quilt she was making, Tiramisu. I loved it immediately and wrote a blog entry dripping with envy and lamenting the fact that I no longer had prints in my stash, and therefore couldn't make one of my own. Poor Mrs. Mel.
Well...
It wasn't long before I received a huge box full of wonderful leftovers and large scraps from Diane and several others who felt the urge to entice me back into piecing. Amazing.
Time passes.
I moved the scraps to Tennessee and yesterday finally got them out of storage.

I spent a lovely day, ironing and color coordinating them and woowoo! I have a lot of really great stuff now.

And I even made a couple of Tiramisu blocks as a test swatch (knitting?)
I am not so sure this is the quilt I want to make, and that's where Wanda comes in. Wanda keeps posting gorgeous quilts on her site and they are just what I want, but not quite the right size for my bed. So it came down to having to make another one.
I emailed Wanda, knowing she has more fabric than God. (Nothing wrong with that). Since she is posting patchwork-already-cut for sale I figured I might be able to twist her arm to sell me some of her stash.
Yes! And she has dots. 168 different dot fabrics, I mean. So I am committed.
There's only one problem. I am not finding a comfortable place/way to sew.
My work table is lowered to sit and sew at, and that makes it too low to cut fabric, since I don't cut so well sitting. My regular sewing table is in the other room, and I don't like that configuration either.

I think there will have to be some furniture rearranging in my day to get a set up that feels better.
While I move furniture, quilt design decisions will be percolating.

  1. Percolating designs... I think that should be the name of the quilt when finished. Just looking at all that fabric makes me want to run to my machine.... but my holidays are committed to travel. Sniff.. I will have to live vicariously through your sewing. That's what I have been doing for quite some time and it works!

  3. Cutting and sorting takes up more space than sewing for this quilt. Do you have another little table for the machine, and could raise the table back up for cutting?
Yes I have 168 dotted fabrics and found even more after I made that quilt!

I use my drafting table, raised to a comfortable height, for cutting. The top is 4'x4' so there's enough room for most projects.

Your kitchen counters are the perfect height for cutting.
I use them when I am in a condo traveling.
I use them in the FL house where my studio is a shared office, guestroom, studio - all in about 12 x 10 feet. KS

And don't forget about cans under the feet of the table a la QSDS.

There's a great image of 'retirement': Mrs. Mel is creating (gorgeous) representational-ish art quilts. And piecing again. Hooray! :)

Now there's no need (perceived or real) to define, market or 'brand' yourself as a creator of a certain style of fibre art. That's very freeing. Enjoy!

I wish I had thought about cans under the table first, but I did purchase bed risers to put under a chest that I use when I'm cutting out small projects. It has to be countertop height or I get a backache. Mrs. Mel, thanks again for the pieced inspiration!

I went to our local discount furniture store and found a counter height diningroom table with butterfly leaves in solid wood for $20! I have a bad back and it just kills me to lean over for too long. When I came home and told my husband what I bought he thought, "Ya, right! That must be some table for $20!" Well, he had to go to the store to pick it up and he couldn't believe what a bargain I got. The reason it was so cheap?? It had a long scratch on the top. What did I care....my extra large cutting mat covers it up beautifully. I also bought the matching high chair, which cost more than the table. I actually sew standing up because it is the perfect height for me.
