Elvis Melody has left the building

I kid you not. I just drove the rental truck back from Tennessee to Cary, and my half empty house. I left Palmer at 3:45am and made it back in ten hours. The speed limit is 70 and I was very near that number all day as I sped along. I didn't exactly go straight home… IKEA has come out with their new catalog, and I just happened to drive right by that store, so I stopped and shopped for a while.

I needed a couple of rag rugs, and got those after trying to decide for an hour if I should or shouldn't buy an entire cowhide for our new living room floor. Only $199 and the skin/fur matches my leather chairs. I ended up passing on the purchase because my cell phone wouldn't let me call Dave for his opinion.

Would a cowhide rug be too creepy or just perfect for a country cottage? After all Dave is a retired butcher…I have the truck until noon on Saturday, so if Dave likes the idea, I can still go back and get it. What do you think he will say? They don't have the tail attached or the head, so there is nothing really too gruesome about it. And some of the brown skins have curly hair, white with auburn. I guess they were Herefords. There are also white and black skins, with branding marks still visible. All were imported from Argentina. You have to see them in person to get the full effect. The nice thing about a cowhide rug is that Popeye probably wouldn't go near it.

The fur was really shiny, like this one...

OK that does it. I have lost any remnant of my good design sense. Living in that sweet Tennessee cottage for two weeks was like being in a stage play, The Long Hot Summer, or Lil' Abner. (Remember the young Paul Newman? O my!)

Now I am in Cary and reality is seeping back into my veins. I have returned to get to work. I leave on Weds for World Quilt and Textile in New Hampshire. Then back to Cary for five more days of getting our house cleaned before I go to Switzerland at the end of the month.

My head is spinning already. One day at a time…

Sending some hugs your way Ms Mel. I cannot believe you drove back by yourself, but then 70 mph is what I can do outside my city limit here, otherwise our highways are fairly 'limitless'.

I am not a 'hide' person at all but I like the curley look of those hides. Though my children did all get their own lamb skin to sleep on when they were babies.

Switzerland in the Autumn is awesome, but I guess it is similar to where you are from or where you now have your new home. Hope you have a grand time there.

Still watching to see the developments of your move.

There was a cowhide rug recently on Ebay. It was made up with different colours and hair types, like patchwork squares, much like the one you described only the underside was lined and the edges were bound, it was really neat but still wasn't for me.

Melody, OK, you asked. Ix nay on the cowhide. IMHO they do not add anything to a room. Many other types of rugs say welcome -- not these.
