The Studio is Packed
It turns out that all my stuff in those drawers could be condensed into a few boxes. These chests of drawers are not coming with me. No room, and they weren't that great an idea in the first place.
I am retiring as of March 2008.There! I have said it.
(From traveling and teaching, not from artmaking!)
But here's a handout for those of you that never signed up for the class. I just made this up for those that feel a handout is necessary. When I tried to use this as a teaching tool, mostly it got buried in fabric while the students created wildly. That's a good thing.
As I packed up I found things that amused me. And this hand out was one of them. Those sketches always make me salivate and want to start making a quilt. Black and white line drawings are like roadmaps and leave all the excitement open for the color to follow.
That will have to wait til I can unpack everything and recreate my studio.
A New Studio... ! Yipes!
I also packed up the quilt fabric that was sent to me when I mentioned that I wanted to make this quilt.
Now I will have the time to actually make it. I am looking forward to sewing a bed quilt.
Won't that be different?
Dave and I are taking a packing day off. I am going to buy a mattress this morning. This reminds me of our newlywed days when everything was exciting and reeked of adventure. And now my back hurts for different reasons. Think about it.
LOL!!!! Different reasons, indeed!
ReplyDeleteThanks soooo much for the handout... since you're retiring I won't have a chance to take a class and this will have to do. Thanks and here's to new adventures!
Since I am your sister, I would prefer NOT to think about it, thank you veddy much.
ReplyDeleteSeeing your house packed makes me sad. Can't wait to see the stuff unloaded and made beautiful in the new space.
Lift with your knees, not with your back.
I laughed when I read your retirement statement because we keep saying Stretch is retiring January 2009 and I am retiring June 2009.... then I think, well, maybe one more year. Yours, luckily isn't a year commitment at a time like mine is, but it does provide health insurance and that is the clincher.
ReplyDeleteAh....so true, so true. But we need to keep the adventure in our lives no matter what our age. I am thinking I need a trip to Nunavut during the summer of 2011 when all my birdies have flown the coop.....now that will be an adventure! And mving to a new place by choice is always an adventure.
ReplyDeleteRetirement- just from teaching, right??

Boy oh boy, I can really identify with this stage of your big move! My husband is desperate to retire early in 2008... I am daunted by the task of actually packing up my sewing room/stash/quilts/life! We are up near Seattle considering a move to the NC/TN area where we can still see mountains and be closer to our grandbaby. I have much downsizing to accomplish before we can put our house on the market.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't found our "cabin in the woods" but I have been following your house search with more than casual interest. Best Luck with the MOVE!

Well you retired 'today', and I will 'allow' you 24hrs with that thought but tomorrow you must 'snap' out of it. You are still full of 'vim' and 'vibes', what will you do with all of those?
ReplyDeleteDownsizing your travels, yes?/Maybe. But full retirement, NO. It would be a great loss for the art quilt world.
Retiring from what???? I am almost 70 and I am never retiring. That is a very boring way to live.
ReplyDeleteI retired from the traveling too about the same age you are. One lady, when she heard I had retired (from my retail store job) said, "You're not making quilts anymore?" I replied that I retired, not died. Of course I'm still making quilts.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to wish you luck and thank you for putting up the handout. I have read your blog for ages and felt the need to make a quilt - I am not a quilt maker. Now I have the 'how to' guide I will definately have a go. SO A BIG THANKS! lv Anna
ReplyDeleteRetirement????
ReplyDeleteIt seems that you have too much energy to retire, but at least it'll give you time to plan your comeback!!!!!
I am so pleased you will be able to concentrate on doing your own thing rather than the 'business' of quilting stuff.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I'm told I should write a book or teach, I'm flattered and then realize I want to do the stuff of making and all that would stop me.
Won't it be lovely not to have to make something for a reason other than just because you want to make it!
Enjoy,
Sally
