A Spot of Peace in all the Chaos
.

The perfume of the phlox could knock you over. There are also a few unseen Stargazer Lillies that are so sweet smelling too. Lucky for us that we have cool days for packing this week.

Two kitchens worth of stuff to have to stuff into one tiny new kitchen...too many decisions.
Just part of what is leftover. Will it stay or will it go in the trash? Some of it still needs to come with us. Which is what? I have lost the ability to make a choice.

I'll be filling these shelves up today. And another trip to the Goodwill with leftovers.

So I am boring myself with all this. For something interesting, go see Brooke's super new work.

  1. You made me exercise that decision-making part of my brain when you came to see me in California. Remember? I know how you feel. It is exhausting. But soon it will be over and you will be so happy with fewer possessions.
    Thanks for the plug!

  2. Just watching what you're doing is making me want to throw away every non-essential thing I own. Scary!! Brooke has really outdone herself with this new one. Thanks for the tip. Pace yourselves

I still don't have a good feeling about this move...but at least you are getting 'acquainted' with your possessions again and letting go of the excess.

I don't mean to be a wet-blanket, but are you sure you are buying the "right" house??? Seems like you don't have enough room and you're not even moved in yet. I'm feeling the same way as the above blogger...I don't have a good feeling about this move for you....sure hope we're both wrong. :)

  5. Dear Worrying and Caring Anons,
We WANTED to downsize. Our current house is humoungous, but 'things' do not a happy home make. One kitchen with an adjacent dining room means we will be together more for meals and shared cleanup. There will not be rooms that we don't use. The stuff we are not taking means nothing anymore. It was fun to buy it, but judging by the dust on it all, I know I didn't use it for anything but shelf and drawer filler.
If one of us goes poof, the smaller house will make it all that much easier to handle and maintain.
We are so looking forward to the garden and pond, and chickens and ducks. The warmer weather is a big plus, and the quiet and solitude will bring about a lot of creative thinking.
And don't forget I will have a HUGE studio in the Potting Shed. How great is that?
Dave gets the thrill of a garage/pond/forest/garden that is all his design, and bigger than our current ones, with a longggg growing season for our orchard and blueberry patch.
And he gets the bubble tub of his dreams.

So, the bottom line is that packing makes me grumpy, but unpacking and playing house makes me soooo happy. You'll see.

My parents moved to "downsize" too. They got rid of TONS of stuff (some of it is now in MY house and garage). Then they started building ON to the new "smaller" house (mom's studio, dad's workshop) and then collecting more stuff to fill those places up! I wish you luck...and I'm glad it's not me. Sometimes change is good no matter what chaos it brings. It inspires the rest of us to at least look at our stuff!

I'd take a 1000 sq ft house over a 2000 sq ft house if the location and weather and landscape and amenities were right. Retirement to me is a time to simplify. Less space to clean, less space to heat and cool. Lower taxes. Forget the "feeling" - it's not rational to allow feelings to influence your decisions. Use reason and logic, which you did and that's how you've come to make this purchase and move. I'm excited for both of you and look forward to riding my motorcycle to TN once and a while for a visit.
