Planning a Retreat
Today some of the girls are meeting for lunch. It took several emails to get us all coordinated for the same day and hour and meeting spot. At least we didn't have to use an airport to make this meeting. However in the future I know it will require even more effort to meet up and since we all have intensely intricate schedules I am going to propose a far in advance annual or biannual retreat like I have heard other groups are doing.
It needs to be in a luxurious spot. We are not campers. There needs to be great food and great art in the vicinity and nothing needs to be planned other than viewing (shopping?), eating and talking. We do not need to bring work, even creative work, to this retreat.
I am not going to hostess it in my new house because I am not going to be buying the big house of my (over and done with ) fantasies. I am going to be buying a teeny cottage so I will have a surplus of funds, allowing me to retire early. At least that's the plan this week.
After having been in Asheville for mere minutes last week I am looking at this spot for our retreat. It is not an easy direct flight there, but it is an easy drive from Charlotte or Knoxville.
Now for the trick of finding a place to stay.
I am hoping we will decide on the Marriot Renaissance Asheville Hotel. Chez Chic!

  1. I've not been there myself, but remember several people I worked with who had been there RAVING about this place and I think it would be in the vicinity of where you're looking for your retreat:

    Melody,
There are many great places to stay in Asheville that will pamper you and have great views. Check out www.groveparkinn.com and also www.secretgarden.com
There is also a beautiful, fun, artsy town just outside Asheville named Black Mountain and there are many great B & B's there and in Asheville.

Think Santa Fe New Mexico for your retreat.
Nothing can top it for what you are looking for.
    Art, Art and more art.
Food - each place better than the last.
Accomodations- charming and you can get the level of pampering you desire.
    Questions? Ask me tomorrow. KS

Charleston, SC is fantastic! Art, architecture, antiques, eccentric citizens, beaches, amazing homes, fabulous food and lots of places to stay at a variety of price points.

  5. Good plan! I still think that you shouldn't discount Greenville, SC as your next abode. Warmer, still mountains, lower taxes (or so I have been told) good art community, great parks and walking trails, nice restaurants, close to Charlotte, good medical community, close to Charleston, closer to ocean, yada yada, yada. amazing how we all have opinions.
