The Ark

The Ark

Hand dyed cottons, fused, hand and machine quilted. ~20x9"

The Ark again, upside down. Or is this right side up? I like it either way. Click for closeups.

I was in need of artistic nourishment and inspiration so I visited the site of Deidre Adams and got just the infusion I needed. Her division of space is so wonderful and of course her colors are yummamente. Kindred spirits.

Hand quilting uses pearl cotton, and is done through just the top and the batting. I know I have said this before, but I still get questions.

For the machine quilting I used #12 Sulky Cotton thread which is really heavy and shows up nicely in contrast to the fabric.

This shows the red Sulky, and then a lighter weight blue thread on the left.

  1. I love this and the threadwork highlights the delicious colors and composition. It's warm and comforting and, to me, re-visits the pueblo-southwest influence. Wishful thinking?

Very nice, the upside down version ... I instantly saw a submarine... Have you dyed any pearl cotton? I really love this small series, and thanks again for all that you share with me... you do this just for me, right?

  3. Lyn, you asked if I had dyed any pearl cotton. I used to dye pearl cotton in sizes 3, 5, 8 and 12 for our business Artfabrik. Laura Wasilowski and I must have dyed a million skeins over the years. I retired from the company in 2002 and never dyed another skein. But then I started dyeing wool yarn, to feed my addiction.

Enough with the zits and zats already. Where are your marvelously creative juices that created the orbit, cruciform and ellipses series?

    Mel,
Your colors are nothing short of yummy! I love the blending you get in your dye technique! I'm not a quilter, but a fellow artist nonetheless, and I'm inspired by your color combinations and your dedication to trying new techniques and combinations.
    Brava!
