Oh No! Bargains!
I cannot stay out of shopping trouble to save my life. I saw this Knit Picks ad and had to investigate. Superwash worsted wool for $3.49 a skein! OK, so I ordered a bunch, like one of each of everything except two of red. O geesh.
And I ordered something else too...more sock yarn that was on sale. In stripes. Too cheap to pass up. I must be nuts.
It is because I am knitting Dave some socks. I gave these two pairs to him, and they were knit from heavier yarns using the same pattern I knit for myself, same needles, same sts, everything, but because the yarn is bigger they came out his size. How neat is that? So that got me thinking... and shopping ( completely forgetting the mountainous stash downstairs).
This is his current sock, made just for him, in this manly shade which was dyed by me and Frieda last year sometime. It is the same yarn as the pink and blue sock. The striped sock is made from 6 ply Regia and it is hard to find, altho I havn't tried all that hard, since I did find that I wanted more of the hand dyed base yarn which is Kona Superwash dk. I went looking for it and found...
Worsted weight Montana wool from here
This is not sock yarn. That's where I get into trouble explaining why I bought it. I went for Kona Superwash DK which is sock-able yarn, but I bought the Montana which is sweater yarn. Not machine wash, will probably felt, but is so yummy and wonderful that I decided to dye it for a sweater, which I don't need and will have to justify some other way. Woe is me.

This is the Kona Superwash (Dave's sock above). See how pretty it dyed up? The thing about this yarn is that it is washable and machine dryable (in a pinch of course, but really it dries fast just on a towel too)
This is 4-ply Regia sock yarn, just for comparison.

It is a sickness. But Christmas is coming, and uh, I have a lot of flight time next year, and um, Dave is now interested in having his own sock drawer. Like mine. Overflowing.
O geesh.
PS. I found a free pattern for the fancy socks I made with all the different colored yarns. It is here. In fact here are a ton of free sock patterns.
This just in: Mreteveian sent this link which is really really great! I just wish I had seen this before I started my socks. Woowoo!
My latest passion is for Emily's lighweight toesock yarn. It's worth every darn penny.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it about sox? Terribly infectious! They are quick to do and the pattern is easily altered without alot of math. Easily transportable too, fits terrifically in a storage ziploc.
I can't give them away tho...they are all for ME, ME, ME. It's all about me ya know!
Your socks got me hunting down these pattern. A mix of yours and these would be fun to knit :-)
ReplyDeleteWow, I love it when you take off Ms Mel. You certainly don't do tiny steps, but in leaps and bounds....yeahhhhh, here's to you and socks for Dave too.
ReplyDeleteIf you lived near me I would unload all my Regia that I have had (curing/storing) now for at least 12years onto your lap.
Thanks for sharing those links.
Mel -- I am just starting to knit so seeing all this yarn and patterns is so inspiring. I crocheted forever but my first knitting project is a sweater. Yow.
ReplyDeleteThanks as always for a wonderful read -- I check your blog daily.
Love these socks - you choose such great colours in your yarns :)
