A Big Sigh of Relief!!!
=

Today I received two full bolts of Wonder-Under from Michelle and the President of Pellon, Charles Arana. I am supremely happy to announce that it is THE GOOD STUFF.

I can barely contain my enthusiasm. The paper peeled right off, and the fusible itself is thin, light and gauze-like, not plasticky and crispy-making. That was a secondary issue, but one that stymied those of us at the Chicago School of Fusing. All of a sudden it was difficult to distinguish the regular Wonder-Under from the Heavy Duty.
Today I visited three stores in search of whether or not the weight of the Wonder-Under had changed. I found that it had at two of the stores. The third store was completely out of the 805 product which is the regular weight and only had some of the heavy duty. The two stores that had the plasticky Wonder-Under also had the heavy duty version and really there was no difference. I peeled the fusible off the paper at the corner and felt them both.
O yes, the paper peels off just fine before you fuse it. And now the paper peels off just fine when you leave on and fuse it as before.

So here's my advice: Once again, the old bad stuff has to be removed from the store and sent back to the distributor. The new stuff must then be ordered and purchased and used and then we are done with this problem. See Frieda's blog for more info on this from Pellon.

How can one tell if it is the good stuff? It has to be purchased and tested at home. Or if the store will agree, at the store. Use a good hot iron, and iron the fusible to the fabric, with the fabric on top, and with a moving iron. Do NOT rest the iron in one place and count to three. Pay special attention to the edges of the fusible so that it gets ironed too. Then let the fabric cool. Pick it up and wave it around to cool both sides. Then peel a corner of the paper up to check if it is fused. Often times we fuse the middle just right and neglect the edges.

Let me know if you have success.

  1. Does the Chicago School of Fusing have a song that we can sing while waving the fabric around to cool?

  4. I purchased a bolt and I just tried it and it is ok. I got it to use at Greater Chicago Quilt Exposition Classes. I would not be a happy quilter if it was from a bad batch.

Thanks so much for the heads up.

    See you in class.

I purchased 3 yards last week at a JoAnns in Lansing, MI. It would not stick to anything - even batik. They would not take it back as I did not have a reciept - even tho they know me as a former part time employee. I will look for it elsewhere - and throw this piece away!!! Should I call Pellon?

  6. Oh this WU stuff has me all in a tizzy too. "I wonder wonder who, who wrote the book of fusibles." You and Laura should write a song!! I would, but I can't sing worth a darn so I would feel unfulfilled. Lucky you with TWO whole bolts of good stuff. I getting close to the end of mine, and I'll have to start hunting for some more next week!
