The Rookie

Dave and I have been playing catch all this week. He bought me a Mizuno first baseman's mitt at a garage sale, and he has a really well broken-in Wilson. He is a great pitcher, and played ball all his life, making the all star ranks innumerable times. He played in the World Series of over 40 guys twice in Arizona. I saw him hit a grand slam once and be the hero of the game.

So when he asked me to catch a few with him, I knew I would be learning from the master.
I did pretty well for an old babe, and caused him to laugh deeper and harder than he had in a long time. We both laughed, really. I listened to his advice and promptly did the opposite. I tried to not look scared when the ball came right at me. Most of the time I caught it. I am such a girl.
But today I was trying to decide to hold my mitt up or sideways and was beaned.

Drama Queen

I went down like a ton of bricks. It stung. I laid there on the grass hoping it would pass quickly as it had yesterday when I was beaned the first time. I have a big target. Dave felt terrible, but really it was nothing, I thought, until I removed my hand and saw all the blood. eeeoouuuwww.

Don't look if you're squeemish. I did not do this in Photoshop.

We applied an ice pack and some Merlot and I felt a lot better.
Dave says I am a real ball player now.
This is high praise.

  1. Good grief. I advise staying indoors where it's safer. Usually.

Ouch! I think there must be a connection between testosterone and ball games (grin). If we were meant to play we'd have bigger hands. I do hope this heals soon.
Just what will the neighbours think?

  6. Ah, yes....the 'take one for the team' rule!
My husband wasn't truly accepted by his ball team until he broke a leg sliding into 3rd.

Hope you mend fast. Who knows? Maybe the impending pretty colors will be an inspiration for art.

Welcome to the Big Leagues! Where can I get Shiner Johnson's baseball card?????

I think Dave has some serious making up to do when you feel better. Milk it for all it's worth! Ha ha!

    Hope you're feeling better soon.

  10. Ouch! But now you have a great excuse to lie back and be pampered. Put on your big Jackie O sunglasses and you'll still look marvelous, if slightly mysterious. Hope you heal soon!

  13. Whoa~! When I go to ballgames I always bring my mitt - not to catch the ball but to clap it over my face at every crack of the bat. I once made the Braves first baseman laugh out loud. Now I can see my instincts are correct.
