Dearest Anonymous,
I am so happy that you wrote me about your distaste for my current quilting style. I know you are being totally honest and I so appreciate that. I also noticed that you changed your opinion, a sign that you are flexible, which makes me love you even more.
As an artist who feels the need to grow and evolve in my work, I have taken this new direction very seriously, since it makes me happy. I know I run the risk of leaving some of my fans in the dust as I speed by, intent on discovering where it is I am heading.
I should say that I have oodles of quilts in my closet, under the bed, in the garage, and packed up in Rubbermaid bins, that have all that fancy quilting that you love, and if you truly feel that I have gone loony, and left the dazzling quilting out of my work for good, then I would offer up to you any of these former works, as COLLECTOR'S ITEMS!
Since I have gone off the deep end, leaving my sense of color on the pier and made a quilt with only a teeny bit of yellow (omigod!) it might be worth mentioning that on my tombstone too.
There is a new look afoot here, but if you want the same old Melody, she can be had. For a price.

ReplyDeleteI love the saturated, limited color pallette. The designs are strong. And only a pro could use simple quilting to such great effect.

I love this quilt the colours are so rich and deep, its got to be one of my favourites. Just had another look at the close up picture, wonderful stitching.

ReplyDeleteDon't think in my readings that I haven't noticed your stock of quilts and yes I would definitely love to own one in the future, right now we have college and pre-college kids. But if I am ever asked what I would like for a 'special' event, then it would be one of your 'old' quilts, without a doubt.

Ah also bet, that when she does get up to go somewhere, (probably the bathroom)...that she has to make two trips cause she can't drag all her can in one trip...

Very tasty (tho I won't lick). I am loving the simplicity of the quilting. When I did the quilting on the first piece I did in your workshop (wow...was that TWO summers ago???) I actually found that the places I *didn't* quilt were actually more impressive than the areas I did.....wish I had left more unquilted but, hey, that's how we learn and it WAS a class piece (tho it has long since been sold....and I miss it).

I bought some hand dyed fabrics from you but I am still waiting for that special moment to use them. It's difficult to want to cut them up! Thank you for all the information you provide. The graphic impact of the colors in this quilt coupled with the line of the quilting is simply jaw-dropping. I just gasped when I saw it. Thank you for sharing your work and your ideas with all of us.

I luv this new direction;color,quilting & exposed batt. It's amazing that these are sketched beforehand,they still retain the spontaneity from the workshop #1. Change is constant.
ReplyDeleteIt's so eay to say "anyone can do it" until you try. There are lots of Nancy Crow imitators out there who forget that Nancy developed her eye for design over years of planned quilts before she started to "improvise". Improvise is not a shortcut.
ReplyDeleteNaturally, Mel, I like some of your new quilts better than others. But that's just personal preference, mostly. Certain colour schemes, a certain balance of complexity/simplicity - we don't all like the same thing. But you sound so excited about your new work - isn't being passionate about what you do the first and most important thing?
