I have been enjoying the look of my quilts in my recently redesigned living room, and have developed an itch to do some work that takes a bit longer than an afternoon.

As mentioned in a post several days ago, I have been thinking about the challenge of doing a long and skinny diptych. I remembered dyeing some panels last summer and found them waiting patiently for this very project. I have it in my mind to do a variation of Matchstick Moons, but with fewer matchsticks, or not matchsticks at all, but another shape.
I learned that it makes sense to quilt and finish the top before adding any matchsticks, as I did with the quilt above. So I spent all day Saturday quilting the new finished panels, readying them for the application of the design.
The moons in this piece are in five different sizes, corresponding to the size of the plates and bowls used as the circle templates. The quilting is my usual stuff, but appropriately colormatched so it is not too noticeable, unless properly lit.
That may have been the whole impetus for me.

Melody, do you first draw the lines on paper and than on the fabric? And how is it that it is only one line from beginning till the end?

Why do you keep going back to the same old quilting style?

ReplyDeleteI do NOT draw the design, but just stitch it. Just as you do not draw your signature first, you just write it because you have practiced it for a long time. I have quilted this way for years, so it is easy for me.
I did draw the outer circle first and the divisions between each section within the circles. I use a sliver of soap as a marking tool, and it is easily removed.
To David, I will show you how it is done, but to do it easily takes practice.
I love the way you quilt within the circle shape and overlap the circles ...I happen to love a good circle...your quilting is timeless..keep on working. Anxious to see the finished panels.
