By Jove, I think she's got it!

Before we left for the the retreat at the Frederick-Talbott Inn, Brooke wanted to dink around with fabric, to build a little confidence before actually taking her first quilt workshop with me. So I let her loose in my studio and she came up with this design. Needless to say I was quite impressed.

I suggested that she had several good ideas rolled into that piece and she should choose one to enlarge and simplify.

This area of the original held a lot of potential. While she immediately knew what color scheme she wanted to use, I suggested that she hold off, and first make a small set of various value variations...

I was way impressed, again. Unbeknownst to her, I was having her do the workshop exercises right on the spot. Before I allowed her to make her composition, I suggested (demanded) she draw up several layouts first, using this design, stretched, turned and reduced, along with negative areas, to produce a pleasing composition.

A few minutes later she had developed these sketches. I was amazed. She just did them. Bing!
OK, Holding my breath, I let her get to the piece she wanted to make. I left her alone, completely...

Ta DA!

Notice the 'transparency' she used repeatedly in her blocks.

Omigod. Stand back. As Dave always says, 'You're on your way!"
