The Fiesta Lunch

Our darling sister-friend Roseangela came for a visit on the train from Chicago.
And what a great reason for a party!

Frieda loves her too.
Here's how the food turned out...

Oops! I started taste-testing the roast before I remembered the camera.

Perfectly shredded carnitas, ready for many Mexican dishes.

Chiles Rellenos con carnitas y queso, y frijoles. Rose calls herself Ms. Frijoles, but we all love them and she has to share!

Looks like Christmas with the green cloth and red dishes. Rose is not a big fan of poblano peppers so I made her sopes instead.

Rose is my ONLY friend who is not a quilter (yet) so Frieda and I took her down to the studio after lunch and introduced her to fusing.

We began with very simple half-square triangles.

The added some strips along one side, for a lopsided but arty log cabin block.

Which grew into four patch blocks.

And will become joined to more to form a whole section of four patch blocks.

Now Rose knows all our secrets!
PS. I learned something wonderful from Frieda, again! I mentioned the other day that parchment paper does work (she said so!) for a fusing base, and yesterday she told me that dryer sheets will remove fusible from my iron. I disputed that hint, since in the past I had tried it and the dryer sheet melted onto my iron and I had devil of a time removing it, let alone the stuck-on fusible.
But to acceed to her wishes, I got one of my new dryer sheets and VOILA! It worked! This must be a new formula, or something, because it did not melt and it certainly worked perfectly. Thank you Frieda, you genius.

The colors of the blocks are wonderfully fresh and lovely. I am glad you finally brought Rose from the 'dark side'.

  2. I've heard this about dryer sheets too. Can you please report on the BRAND that does work? Apparently I've used the brand that doesn't work since I've also scortched them. My solution is usually to go buy a new iron at Big Lots.

The meal looks wonderful from the photos of the prep work to the finished product. If you weren't such a wonderful art quilter, you could easily find work as a food stylist. Your presentation is amazing.
Now this may seem weird to say as I have never met Rose but every time I see a photo of her, I can't help but note that she has the kindest eyes of anyone I have ever seen.

  4. Hi! Looks like a very fun get-together! And have you noticed that Rose looks sorta like your sister Brooke?! (In that first picture, that's who I thought it was at first, even while I thought, wait, Brooke is in Singapore and has short hair...)

I give up! I wasn't going to cook today, but now I'm craving enchiladas...
I love the pastel colors in these blocks, must be your newly dyed ones...
My sister doesn't quilt, but I've introduced her to fabric dyeing and painting, maybe I can convert her with your method.... hehehe...
