Inspirational Book List
Tommy suggested I list the books that I use for inspiration. Good idea Tommy. Of course I refer constantly to the past catalogs from Visions and Quilt National. I have practically all of them in my library. And all of Nancy Crow's books too, and soon her newest one will arrive at my door.
But when it comes to making designs for my patterns, I usually look for illustration type books, since picture quilts are what my patterns are about.
I love to look at childrens books for simple shapes and bright colors
Eric Carle's illustrations are just wonderful, and so free and simple.
Must have used that leaf shape a million times.

Then there is Lois Ehlert, and I have all her books too.
Watercolor illustrations: her colors really sing.

I have also loved these author/illustrators..
Look at the patterns within these shapes. Too wonderful!
Layers of patterns in increasingly smaller scale...
I know I have lifted ideas from them, but I only steal from the best.
I don't look at quilting magazines much for ideas, but I do love Ornament, for it's succinct jewelry designs. It give me ideas for quilts all the time.
Strip piecing from this necklace. Must try this out soon.
Cool fabric designs. These can be cut out of fabric and added to a composition.

Eye Crack! yummy!
ReplyDeleteI used to work with Lois in Milwaukee a "zillion" years ago. Her illustrations have always incorporated paper collage, if not just collage. I'm missing some of the books you featured. I must get them ... for me ... maybe I'll share them with my grandchildren.
ReplyDeleteGreat Stuff! I just busted out my Nancy Crow books the other day.She had an exhibit in D.C.('96) when I was living there and I was fortunate enough to get her autographs and meet her hand quilter. She validates my method of creative thinking everytime I read her book intro. "Aspire to inspire ere you expire."
ReplyDeleteI look at a lot of kid's books for inspiration too. Thanks for showing your list.
ReplyDeleteI read Eric Carle almost everyday to my youngest, and the illustrations are inspiring every time.
ReplyDeleteEric Carle and Lois Ehlert are my favorites, too. I have always wanted to do an Eric Carle-esque quilt.
ReplyDeleteI've bought Eric Carle books for my grandchildren just because I loved the pictures. Will have to check out the other ones, especially Lois Ehlert.
ReplyDeleteLoved Eric Carle and
ReplyDeleteLois when my kids were small--and Jan Brett...but now a cat is sleeping on my shoulder so I can't say more...
