Prayer in the Studio
====
There is no controversy about whether or not I can have prayer in my studio. As I work I have a prayer on my lips throughout the whole act of creating.
God, where are those scissors, I know I just had them!
O thank you Lord, this is the perfect size scrap for this spot!
It's a Miracle, I've lined these teeny pieces up!
But the real miracle is that when I look for a color or shading of one color to the next for a specific spot, one appears, literally unrolls before me. I know I dyed all these fabrics, and fused many of them many, many months or even years ago. I have no idea what they will be used for, and when I start a project like this one, I have no real idea of what colors I will need, but nevertheless, I stride forward in the full faith that what I need will be available to me.
And it is. Really.
Just look at the way the fabric dissolves from light to dark to emphasize the line of the design. Who could plan to have that fabric do that? Certainly not me. It is way spooky I think that this should make itself evident just when I need it and not before. It makes me think that this artwork was DESTINED to be made.

Another thing that surprises and delights me is that the color on one piece of fabric is exactly the same mixture found on another piece, made at a completely different time, and sometime even on differing fabrics! I can't explain this phenomenon, but it happens again and again and just at the right time when I need it for the piece I am seeking.

Am I reading too much supernatural hooey into this? O maybe, but then I need all the extra help I can get when I am making something like this piece. It is the last quilt I will have time to make until like April. So I am hoping this is the 'one' of this series that really takes the concept to the mountaintop.
I love your work. but it's nice to know even a professional needs a prayer to keep track of her scissors. I always wonder how much more work I could accomplish if I could just keep track of my scissors.
ReplyDeleteWOW! i can't believe the movement in that quilt - it's fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteAlthough it is only a part, I have this shivery feeling when I look at it. I think it will star. I can't believe I missed your blog yesterday. What in the hell is wrong with me? I want you to do a piece while you are visiting, remember?
ReplyDeletewell, you are doing it again! Looking really good!

Gah! (in a good way) The colour and the form move me, I can't wait to see the entire piece.
