More Ton Schulten Quilts

an unattributed Ton Schulten type quilt at Houston
My dear friend Joan Frantz sent me two pictures of quilts that she saw in Houston that were made like the Ton Schulten paintings I have been mesmerized with this Autumn. I must be the last person on earth to have 'discovered' his work, since there seems to be so many finished pieces out there on exhibit already...
Well, I am about to burst! Ten minutest ago when I was looking for the rest of my class supplies in my studio cabinet, I came upon some ufo's that have been taking up space. As I rifled through these old pieces I found this false start that has to be at least four years old. I swear. REALLY OLD. Now that I look at it, it all becomes clear to me why I was so attracted by the Ton Schulten stuff.

Duh! Same colorblocking and same house shapes. I swear on all I hold dear that I had not ever seen his stuff until this year and yet have channeled his concepts some time ago.

Note the tiny houses and even tinier windows,

and the color groupings that he does. Hmmm.

This is another quilt that was hanging at Houston. This looks dizactly like a painting he may have done. All his work is beginning to look alike to me now. Still it has merit as a design exercise...I think...or not.

Anyway I should be packing as I am leaving in a coupla hours. I just had to show this to you. I was really surprised.

  1. It is definitely design worthy...which explains why quilters are attracted to the style. Have a fun trip!

  2. What's especially funny to me is that you were clearly working on this concept years ago. I wonder if someone had finished your quilt for you and you'd encountered it hung somewhere, would you have loved it? I'm guessing yes. So your own artistic impulse is ahead of your brain? I think this is a GOOD thing. And since you are drawn to this over and over (and over time) you must need to work on this more. Very fascinating. Have fun at AQT! Wish I could go...have a glass of wine for me!

  3. Synchronicity, dear Ms. Mel. All this stuff is just floating around in the universe like electric currents and sattelite signals. We can't see 'em, but they are there.
My mother has always said that if radio waves can go through the air, why not brain waves? Amazing.

  4. I think we all do houses one way or the other. The first piece of art my son brought home from kindergarden was of a house with mommy and daddy and boy. He was a happy kid, what can I say lol. Ok here is a pic of a row of wooden painted block houses sitting on my kitchen window sill. See we are normal, we love the house..this set even has ah outhouse and two churches mind you...lol

  5. Obviously I'm late to the comment party on this one since it's Dec 28 and you posted this on Nov 5. But I was thinking about the house shape/symbol today and had to come back to see this before-you-even-were-aware-of-Schulton inspired UFO. It really draws me in. I adore every little detail.
