More Dyeing Q & A

Dear Melody,

I have a question--Should I pack all my dyes away, now that winter is coming? Maybe you have answered this before, if so, sorry! I dye in the cellar, and it's pretty chilly. I am way too messy to trust myself upstairs! Any suggestions?

Dear Messy,
Me too! I use up my dyes the day I mix them or within a day or two. Dyes mixed with water start to hydrolize and loose effectiveness pretty quickly. I would just dump them in the sink if you are not going to use them up in the next day or two.
Dry dye powder lasts indefinitely, like centuries...

Melody, another dyeing question if i may...and if i can write it to make sense...
when you mix your formulas, do you do it using liquid mix or dry powder...
for example, if i want to make up green, would i put some yellow and blue powder together and then add water OR would i make up yellow liquid and blue liquid and then mix the liquids to get the shade of green i want? or does it make any difference? how do you do it?

I usually mix my greens, aqua, purple and magenta in the powder form as I load the dye into the water. Sometimes I will use the liquid dyes to add a jolt of color into the mix of another shade, say like a hit more of blue into the magenta to purple it up a bit.

I have more control with the dry powder so my stock solutions are mixed in the beginning and then later I can adjust if it needs adjusting.

Once again, playing around and experimenting is how we all discover that which works the best.
