Then this morning my email from Judy Coates Perez, winner of 2nd place in Paint, told me that my quilt Matchstick Moons #3, in the Husqvarna Exhibit, Art Takes Shape, has been sold!!!
Now that made me wake up my husband. Woowoo!
Matchstick Moons #3 is 51" square, the hardest part about making the thing was getting it to be that required size. ====================================================================And now for something completely different. Kristen La Flamme sent me this picture of her son's school book. It is a painting by Ton Schulten, and it looks to be a lesson about shapes.
I am so interested in using his work to help clarify design concepts to my students. I wish I could read German and see what this textbook is saying.
Speaking of clarifying things for my students...I need to distill my work this year into a ten minute slide presentation for Art Quilt Tahoe. Ha! Usually I can fill an hour plus with Me Me Me, but to scale it down to a mere ten minutes is a herculean task. Then in reverse, what is it that I have actually accomplished this year? eeeuuoouu. Not nearly enough. So some artful padding will have to be in order. I am planning to use my husband's early and unexpected retirement as an excuse and see if I can get away with that.
Now that the World Series is over, I guess the end of the year is coming soon, and AQT and San Francisco will be my last work for 2005. My schedule tells me I should be updating my regular website in November and planning my quilt competition entries for January of 2006. We are already putting away summer things and moving the kitchen upstairs, a regular rite of autumn. I know where we will have Christmas this year, at Frieda's, so that eliminates a lot of planning and decorating. Thanks Frieda.
This all seems to be happening so fast, again. But really there is a lot I must do very soon to get ready for AQT. Enough celebrating. It's back to work today.
Congratulations! Well deserved. I think you've accomplished a lot this year... you've written a great blog and inspired tons of artists. That alone is huge.

Wow Mel, Matchstick Moons is so awesome that they would have to be nuts not to give you the award. Congrats to you. As I'm sure you're tired of hearing, I love, love,love your work. I've finally finished the UFOs and got out the fabric I purchased from you a while back for bodacious bloomers. It;s off to the sewing room for me. Glad your back. Dee

How about a year a minute for your talk? Pick what you feel is your most representative or significant quilt for each year of the last ten years...
Congrats on the both the Matchstick Moons!! Thanks also for the shout-out. To translate, this is from my son's first grade math book. It says that the painting is by Ton Schulten and that the student could make up a name for it. Then they should find the buildings below in the painting and then color them in (I like that it does not give instructions to color the buildings the same as in the painting). The second page asks the student to identify the shapes and color the buildings. The bear on the far right suggests that you can make potato stamps and make your own buildings. Hmmm, potato stamps, perhaps this will be Mrs. Mel's next direction in quilting!

ReplyDeleteDon't spend all your money in one place...like the yarn shop. Enjoy the moment with a margarita for me. Houston has been good to us this year. The 10 minute talk is easy...just talk about what you do or why you do it and sit down.

I always think about how intricate and glowing it looks. I swear one day I'll make something that looks way too similar because it is engrained on my visual psyche.
