Moving Closets

This is the closet nearest Dave's new room, and it is filled to overflowing with my stuff. Or was. Now all this stuff is gone to the new walk-in closet adjacent to my room.
I made the pictures small to minimize my embarrassment at all the stuff I have collected and stored.

The closet is now officially Dave's for his clothes and his stuff. He doesn't have much, IN THE HOUSE, but he had a tool shed and garage which houses a zillion more things than would fit in here.

We installed hanging shelves on one wall in the newly finished walk in closet, and then I filled them with the stuff from the previous spot. I still have another wire shelf unit to assemble today and that will be filled with solely art supplies, reducing slightly some of the things from this shelf.

Several things happen when one moves and store one's stuff.
1. Things are found that were lost, presumably
2. Double and triples of things are discovered
3. Questions arise, i.e. What is this for? Why am I keeping this? When was the last time I used this?
4. Guilt, massive amounts of guilt rise to the surface. Must I have so much stuff? And what is this all about? Will I live long enough to use all this yarn, fabric, paint, etc.
Arrgghh.
So I got up super early today, thanks to Chumley wanting to eat NOW and then having to go out and then Dave coming home at 4am...I kid you not. So I stayed up and silently cleaned out my dresser drawers, rearranged my linen closet, and folded laundry.
I have got to get a grip on my life!

  1. Now I'm going to go out and get plastic bins for all my yarn. I hardly ever knit but got into felted purses a few years ago and have enough yarn to make hundreds! But, who knows, I might just need it someday. I have it all stowed in a big cabinet I had built in the casita and at least it will LOOK organized, just like yours!

  2. You're certainly making good progress! One thing I find about these supplies is that items like batting take up so much space. It's hard to find a good way to store them. They're not heavy, just fluffy and expansive, and fill up a space quickly.

  3. I can identify with your guilt! I am trying to move permanently south but have too much stuff. Dyed 400 yards of fabric this summer as I found I had accumulated sooooo much pfd cotton fabric! Haven't touched all the silks yet....

  4. Moving is a good time to think, contemplate and purge. If you really think you have more than you can ever use, sell or give some away. You will feel lighter and less weighed down by stuff.

Oh I admire your organization. When I walk into my closets (fabric or clothes)I am paralyzed by the enormity of what needs to be done. So I live in disorganized closet chaos. Wish I could be more like you.
