Finally Finished: Full Sails

Full Sails, hand dyed cottons, fused, machine quilted. 48x37" $1500 Email me.

I made this top and quilted it eons ago. Ok not eons, but about October of 2009. I never liked how the back looked and just couldn't bring myself to bind it, or do anything else to finish it until today. Today is like the Day of Fixing Things. I found a complimentary piece of fabric ( Marimekko no less) and decided to use the Escape Hatch finish as my solution. This meant that the backing (or lining fabric) would not be quilted and that posed another problem. My solution was to machine tack the backing from the front, matching thread color so each tacking stitch would be invisible. See the way the tacking stitches look on the back, before trimming? They DO NOT show on the front at all.  Now I am able to add a rod pocket for hanging over the slit formed by the aforementioned Escape Hatch finish.

Here's a close-up of the clean edge, no binding, just a nice turned under finish, like a knife edged pillow. Sigh. Another weight lifted off my shoulders.

  2. Love, love, love that quilt. That fantastic fabric with that touch of blue looks so much like the sky at sunset out on the Pacific. So glad you finally finished it. I've been admiring it since last year when I found your blog.

  14. Wonderful quilt, perfect name. Was it a plan or did it turn out to look like sails in the sunset? (Or should I ask?) In any case, it's perfect.

  18. Saw this on your post last year and loved it. It's absolutely breathtaking. It's depth gives it a commanding presence. I admire your ability to stick with it even though the commission fell through. Now you have a show stopping piece that I'm sure you will sell for the price you've set. Kudos!
