In the back of my mind there was the thought that if we had a puppy it would get us (me, really) up off my butt and outside walking. It has happened. We are all out there walking and running with the Chum. He needs to be de-energized and we absorb his excess energy. Dave takes off in a run, Chumley jets to his side. Back and forth, over and over. Perfect.
It is that time of year when huge acorns come flying down from the trees, bombarding us and enticing the pup. He is teething and loves to chew on the them. I fear he will choke so I am constantly removing them from his razor sharp teeth. This has led to a clean sweep of the deck and using this space as a puppy playground. When he is tired he runs to the studio sliding door and we are now trained to let him in. Who is in charge?

Our nights have changed too. Previously spent in our respective rooms watching different tv shows, or on the computers, now we are all in the studio together, watching him, snoozing, knitting and laughing. This is really good. Chumley loves yarn and anything else on the floor. Again, a clean sweep was required and I keep a sharp eye out for sudden chewing. Shoelaces are a favorite, but they were replaced with Dave's recently removed socks. Oooh, smelly feet. In short, we are parenting, at our old age!
On the garden front, we have iris in bloom. Wha? A recent few days of rain got them triggered I guess. And our nasturtiums are better than ever, with some really unusual blossoms. October is such an underrated month. The sky is so brilliantly blue and the leaves are blowing around their gold, red, and orange autumn glory. We sat in the hot tub last night under the stars, sparkling first in the east as the pink sunset glowed in the west.
If I sound truly happy, it is because I am.
Oh yes you have to be happy with this cute puppy - I know it I have 2 puppys!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou sound happy, you act happy, you are happy. And yes, we can hear it, feel it, see it. Makes me feel all gushy to know some one else has found BLISS. Ain't life grand?
ReplyDeleteThe puppy is surely a sweetheart, enjoy.
Many hugs!
Be a congratulation to the parent. You sound really very happy and it is nicely to be read how Chumley allows to move together your family. I am glad for you.

Awwww... I love it! And the exercise is good for you all... are you still getting the other one too? What a houseful you'll have if you do! No time to quilt, knit, dye, garden... gotta play with the pups! I'm glad you got him... sounds like a good fit!
ReplyDeleteAmazing how a dog/cat puppy/kitten can brighten your whole day/outlook. Please be careful with Rawhide treats -they can cause some serious problems. Never unsupervised!!! Much better to give him toys he can have all the time!
ReplyDeletePugs are the happiest breeds around, but I love my GSD's.
Happiness is dripping off your blog and now making all your readers happy too! :)
ReplyDeleteI am happy you are happy!
ReplyDeleteSuch a cutie and it's so wonderful to read about what he's brought to your lives. A great post to read at the beginning of the day!
ReplyDeleteMelody, we are also the new parents of a 10 week old lab pup. Haven't had a baby in the house for 11 years, we forgot how much fun and how much work it is. My puppy tip of the day is: send Chumley to bed with a small frozen carrot. He will love the cold sensation in his mouth, it's a great chew toy and is good for the digestive system. Have fun with your boy!

Sounds like good 'ol fallin' in love again! This time, puppy love! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it wonderful what animals do for our lives? Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI just KNOW Chumley has a British accent! "I say, old Chum, anyone for walkies?" Glad you guys are enjoying this whole adventure! Cute pup.
ReplyDeleteDogs are a wonder and a joy. So glad you are experiencing this yourself. Besides the benefit of walking, dogs (pets) have been proven to reduce stress and lower blood pressure in humans (except when they are in puppy mode destroying property).
ReplyDeleteAnd you deserve it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie! Chumley's in luck, sounds like you and Dave will be easy to train!
ReplyDeleteDogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace.

Enjoy paradise you both deserve it.
Hi Melody,
ReplyDeleteA word of warning - be very vigilant over whatever your puppy likes to chew. We learnt this the hard way, when our (then) 4month old Golden Retriever "Grand-puppy" had to have an Emergency 'un-zipping' by the vet after eating the kids underwear - it cost $$$ and was very stressful for us all! Not to mention nearly fatal for the puppy. We just love being grand-parents - all of the fun, and we hand her back. We'd never had a dog, and like you, we fell headlong in love in an instant.
"And they call it ... puppy lovvvvvvvvve..."
ReplyDeleteCurrently, my 1-year-old terrier has moved from her side of the couch (that side has a blanket protecting it) to my side -- for the 4th time. Each time, I walked over to tell her "NO!")
Who trained whom, indeed!
Oh my! Chumley is adorable! Congratulations on the puppy parenting.
ReplyDeletePups can be such a gift!! Yours is SO cute!
ReplyDeleteLove dogs, and puppies are a delight, but I can't have one right now. But I can watch yours and get my fix. So thanks.
ReplyDeleteBrings back memories of how head of heels I fell in love with my Shih Tzu Ginger - 14 years ago. She is a charmer.
ReplyDeleteAlso eware of giving Chum the "greenies" to chew on. My dogs eat about half of them and then try to swallow. I've had to try sorta heimlich on them a couple of times before we swore off them.
Well you always wanted a dog, I know how much you will love having one. As you know I love my George, even as he ages. You are so lucky.
