Treehouse IV

Treehouse IV
Hand dyed and commercial cottons, fused, hand and machine quilted, 14.5x15" $250 Email me

Years ago before I started dyeing fabrics I was attracted to colors in gradations and I wanted to learn how to dye them. That's usually the first thing one does when experimenting with dyes. I found the directions and produced the gradations, but then I had these perfect six or eight steps of color and didn't want to use them up, seeing that one or more of them were the vibrant fully saturated color and then the rest were watered down versions. What I wanted was that same gradation of color to move from one hue to another on the same piece of fabric, not many pieces that I would have to cut and sew to achieve this effect.

After some trial and error I learned that one can dye like painting, and get that subtle mix of one color to the next and all the unnamed colors in between. This is what I wanted!

The yellow to orange house in this piece and the orange to pink background fabrics do this color shifting thing , as well as the trees which have orange, yellow and light to dark greens. I still use the plain solids too, but my favorites are the ones that move from one color to another. These are my Special Edition fabrics.

  2. Those Special Edition fabrics are my absolute favorite favorites! I hoard the ones I have like the gold they are. Sometimes I take one out and fondle it, soaking in the glorious color. Thank you for making my heart sing by creating such luscious colored fabrics!

Ooh! AAH! I'm still loving the trees - the french knots plus the hand cut circles have great movement - but I think what I love most is the wee little gold window with the turquoise stripe! Such a simple thing, and it makes all the difference!

  6. Those are my faves too, and I really need to find time to try that method of fabric dyeing! BTW, love the treehouse series... beautifully done as usual!

  7. I'm loving this series. Are you making a house for each season? (I could be winter, II could be autumn, III could be summer and VI could be spring)

How did you start the first one? Do you just start cutting fabrics in pieces and wait for an idea to come? or do you already have an idea in mind?
