For this piece I began with washes of color, layer upon layer until shapes appeared. Those directed me to emphasize the brush strokes, which in this case were square-ish due to the 1" wide brush I was using. Looks like architecture on a hillside to me.
But these blue shapes looked more rocklike. The clouds were an easy decision. Then for emphasis I started using the pencils and really liked how they integrated the composition.
