This is the enlarged version of Detail #3 from the first Orbit painting. The hope was that I would be simplifying the design, focusing in on the important stuff.
While I am happy with this piece, there is a nagging problem sufacing...
I don't seem to be loosening up with each consecutive piece in this series.
Instead I seem to be just refining the places I have already been.
This is familiar territory. I painted like this before, in my innocent youth.
I have arrived at Go! I have proved to myself that I can handle the paint, and can produce a dependable product. Product? Wha?
That's not what I want. I want to amaze myself. I want to thrill myself. I want to break free of the familiar and take a giant leap into the scary parts.

ReplyDeleteMel, I recently read that if you mix the paint with prune juice rather than water it will losen you up.
ReplyDeleteSTOP painting inside the LINES! the lines should only be a suggestion of where the shapes are, unless of course you really are a "paint by the numbers" artist????
ReplyDeletethis may be seen as a "mean comment" but it's meant as more of a "kick in the pants" one. Stop trying to make something you recognize. Use your left hand. Turn the canvas upside down every 15 minutes. Paint over anything that looks like a line.
I've waited this long to say something, thinking you would get this type of painting out of your system. Feel free to delete.
Joanne's comments are really interesting and worthwhile considering for me personally. Thanks Joanne, don't know how Ms Mel feels but especially that idea of 'turning the canvas around every 15mins' could create exciting results.
