Nine Big Blocks Finished!

Nine Big Blocks from all angles. It is large enough to have a pillow tuck which surprised me. 97.5x98". I had planned on 99" square, so that's pretty darn close. Of course, Dave doesn't want to have this ruined by the dawgs so it is already folded and packed away, for some future eventuality.

Here it is without the pillows, but because this bed has a footboard, the other end is piled up with no place to go. I put the decorative pillows in there to see if they would 'go'.
I am so happy to have this big one in the finished column. And to see it on the bed, justifies my original concept. Of course I was also experimenting with how large a block I could make to compose a quilt with the QAYG method.

What did I learn?
I placed the blocks alternately with horizontal straight line quilting and vertical straight line quilting. If I were smarter, I would have had all the lines going the same direction. The stretchiness and not-stretch of the quilting made it difficult to line up the blocks. Maddeningly difficult. And this also caused unintentional wonkiness, but then I knew as I quilted that I was in trouble and kept going anyway.

Now that I have made three twin sized and one queen sized bed quilts I am done making bed quilts for a while. It was great fun to do this QAYG and I owe a big thank you to Marianne of www.thequiltingedge.com for her superb tutorials on the process. I encourage you who are still on the fence to give this a try, if only a small study, and you will feel the excitement I feel now about doing big bed stuff. Really.

  2. It's a beauty. I know you are not sure you want the dawgs on it but how can you bear to put it away. It makes me happy to look at it.

What a beautiful quilt! It looks so fresh and contemporary with your colour and fabric choices, and yet is based on a very old traditional pattern. You have proved that traditional and modern can co-exist joyfully!
I agree that your centres were the most creative and successful sections. I am looking forward to seeing what you tackle in the next few days!

"so it is already folded and packed away, for some future eventuality."

Like putting it up for sale maybe?

I am interested in knowing how you pieced this together and seeing what the back looks like.

  5. Anon,
I would sell this, but not on Ebay, just person to person. If you really want to buy it, email me.
The back is totally white, and very neat and lovely. Which is one of the reasons I like QAYG.

I like your suggestion - start small. Maybe a dolly quilt for yet-to-be born grand-daughter. Beautiful 9 block.

I admit I was a bit skeptical when I saw some of the blocks....wasn't sure I'd like the color combo. It is spectacular!! I, too, am sorry that you have packed it away. Well done!

  18. Looks really good. I'm in a quilting bee and I'm waiting on the last block to come back so then I'll have a quilt-as-you-go quilt too!

  19. It turned out so great! I know that the quilting lines made you crazy, but having the lines in different directions looks so much better. So inspiring!
