Nine Big Blocks Finished!

Nine Big Blocks from all angles. It is large enough to have a pillow tuck which surprised me. 97.5x98". I had planned on 99" square, so that's pretty darn close. Of course, Dave doesn't want to have this ruined by the dawgs so it is already folded and packed away, for some future eventuality.


Here it is without the pillows, but because this bed has a footboard, the other end is piled up with no place to go. I put the decorative pillows in there to see if they would 'go'.
I am so happy to have this big one in the finished column. And to see it on the bed, justifies my original concept. Of course I was also experimenting with how large a block I could make to compose a quilt with the QAYG method.

What did I learn?
 I placed the blocks alternately with horizontal straight line quilting and vertical straight line quilting. If I were smarter, I would have had all the lines going the same direction. The stretchiness and not-stretch of the quilting made it difficult to line up the blocks. Maddeningly difficult. And this also caused unintentional wonkiness, but then I knew as I quilted that I was in trouble and kept going anyway.

Now that I have made three twin sized and one queen sized bed quilts I am done making bed quilts for a while. It was great fun to do this QAYG and I owe a big thank you to Marianne of www.thequiltingedge.com for her superb tutorials on the process. I encourage you who are still on the fence to give this a try, if only a small study, and you will feel the excitement I feel now about doing big bed stuff. Really.
