Sorry if my attempts to explain flip and quilt caused more confusion than clarity. Here's a picture of what I am doing. The quilt is to the left and the batting is to the right. The top and backing fabrics are folded back, away from the seam allowance. The batting is butted up next to the seam allowance, not on top of it. The wide zig zag catches the batt and the seam allowance at the same time.
Here it is after it is sewn. Then the front and back are flipped over onto the newly sewn batting and you are ready to quilt that part next.
As I always suggest, the best way to really understand this is to make a small sample. Best wishes.

I had totally forgotten about flip & quilt until you mentioned it yesterday. Thanks for clearing away some of the cobwebs in my brain. I'm going to do this with my next small project.
