I mentioned that I was going to surprise my sister and post her quilts on my Flickr site as a way of encouraging her to get back into the studio. The response to her work was AMAZING. But of course, I didn't have the names or the sizes or any other information about her designs, and so at lunch yesterday I offered to correct that and make a page of just her work for all to see.
Her new PAGE is at the top of this blog, Art Quilts by Brooke, or you can copy the url here.
I loved reading the comments you wrote initially and one that really stood out was " If I were that talented, I would never leave my machine". For Brooke there seemed to be so many reasons not to make art, now that she is working full time and has to drive her DD to school and all the rest of the routine that family life entails. But her gift is a big one and it needs to be attended to, so I am encouraging her as only a big sister can.
A little background. Years ago I suggested she get into quilting. She could already sew, and I guessed she would enjoy making a quilt too. But her response was "Why should I do what you already do?" and I said "So we could have something in common". We are 18 years apart and never really lived together so as sisters it would be a connection we could share. When it finally did happen, she just jumped right into it without any lessons or art school stuff or anything, and VaVooom! She was sooooo good at it. I was impressed. But sometimes a big sister's opinion isn't as important as the one from outside the family. You have given her a taste of that and I for one, THANK YOU.
You are a good big sister. Your sister's quilts are wonderful and it is so nice to see you encourage and celebrate her gift.
ReplyDeleteAmazing quilt! I'm guessing she fuses her quilt like you. Awesome talent runs in your family.
ReplyDeleteBrooke's quilts are amazing! There is such a free spirit to her quilts that one forgets the artist is still dealing with all the live stuff at the same time. Thank you for sharing and hopefully we will get to see more in the future--you both have such a love of color!!!
ReplyDeleteQuilt on!!

I just checked out Modern Day Quilts and saw your sister's quilt. I am so tickled for her. She has to be thrilled....I would be. You may qualify as the best big sister ever!

ReplyDeleteArtistic talent must be part of your gene pool. My great grandmother was a talented seamstress and her daughters were all painters. By time I came around the pool had become so shallow that all I can do is admire the talents of others! But I do acknowledge the beauty in your work
