Make Me a Quilt: Maggie

The Moon Beams
Hand dyed silks, cottons, and prints
Fused, machine quilted
17.5x23"

It's been crazy around here and I was so distracted by the swiftly moving renovation. There was even a day when I went nuts cleaning! Not like me, but I had had it with all the dust, and disorganization.
I couldn't think of what to do for Maggie's quilt, and when I draw a blank I look at art and hope it will give me a hint. I have lots of art books and saved so many postcards and catalogs from art shows, but when it comes to feeding the muse, Pinterest really does it right. This kooky tree collage was so fun and all these yarn bombing trees I have seen added to my confidence. And then I pinned these painted tree branches and became convinced that I could do something quilty with these ideas.

Maggie suggested that she loved the ferns, but these silk ferns turned into pine trees, so do they count? I hope so. I had a real blast making this piece and feel like the trees I see daily could provide future inspiration.

I LOVE this! The colors, the wonderful quilted spirals, the way the quilting at the bottom echoes the (fern)trees and just everything about it. Julie

  10. Hey Melody,
I love the yarn bombed tree(s!) I've been "fabric bombed." As far as I know, the only person in the world to receive such a treat. I thought you might be interested in the photos showing it, on my blog:

  15. Fabuloso! Such vibrancy - it's a glorious piece of work. And, as coincidence would have it, this morning I was reading an article about the sculptor Lee Littlefield and his pop up sculptures of vibrantly painted trees, plants, etc.
You probably know his work well, but just in case: http://www.chron.com/entertainment/article/Husband-wife-artist-duo-present-works-in-1695976.php

  19. I can't believe my good fortune!! This quilt is way beyond gorgeous/ cheerful/inspiring/colorful/ detailed/ calling for an up close study/creative/incredibly executed/ put it in the most prominent place in the house/original, on and on. I am indeed very lucky!!! And, feel very honored and even special, to have some work of Melody's.

Wow, Melody! I feels to me that you have produced something very original while still using your "tried and true" elements. You must feel soooo good about this. I wonder what you could do with the thought of the northern lights behind the tree branches as that's what the colors around the moon made me think of. Marken

Nothing short of AMAZING!!! There is so much energy - the way you used those beautiful fabrics and the wonderful quilting. When I read through Maggie's requests I wondered how you would put it all together, but you have done it again!

  32. Love everything you create, but this one is absolutely fantastic. It almost makes me want to use a swear word, as in "it is f*@#$% amazing", but I will refrain.
I love it when people tell you their favorite colors and it is every color in the rainbow! There is NOBODY who can do what you do.
