Make Me a Quilt : Bonnie

Our Orchard Home
Hand dyed and commercial cottons, fused,
hand embroidered, machine quilted.
18.75" x 15"

Click and then click again for an extreme close up view of those tiny French knots.
Bonnie, who lives in New Zealand, asked for a design that would reflect their home on a pear and apple orchard. My first inclination was big apples and pears, but then I thought again, and put more emphasis on the home aspect and that felt better, so I began anew.
Looking at my series of quilts with house shapes gave me the necessary configuration and I expanded the size in both directions. The stylized or abstracted pear and apple trees were simplified down to the barest essentials. And then the small dots on the left are my 'flowers'. French knots are the apples and the multicolor leaves on the tall pear trees.
To return to the house and tree motifs was so satisfying and once again, I think doing this Make Me a Quilt thing it just what I needed.

  1. Aren't I the luckiest girl ( albeit an old girl! ) on the planet? Isn't it the most beautiful thing you have ever seen?

Unlike the knitted jacket list, I am still taking names for the Make Me a Quilt list. Email me, if you want to be added and if you are a patient person. ha!

  9. Melanie, I just read the part about you still taking names for quilt buyers. I thought I had signed up initially and then went back later and my comment didn't post. In my excitement I didn't log in correctly.

Anyway, I would love to be added if it isn't too late. I'm always excited to see the finished product as you post the pictures. Your work is beautiful.

  14. I love the mix of store bought and hand dyed fabrics. Your instincts for the symbolic representation of the fruit was perfect. I love it!

Just beautiful! Your hand-dyed fabrics are exquisite and the way you blend them with commercial fabrics is amazing. The "flowers" at the bottom just sparkle!
