A Series of Spooky Events

Years ago, and I do mean years, I made the original Hot Flash quilt

(not to be confused with the one on the blog header above)

and sold it to my friend Joann Kiehn. Joann moved to Pacific Grove CA and I didn't see her again until I visited Carmel with Sue Nickels about 4 or 5 years ago. Sue and I were walking down the street and Joann was in a car driving the opposite way and we saw each other. What was the chance of that happening?

Then last week I was teaching in Monterey, and had a Monday evening lecture in Pacific Grove and Joann shows up for the lecture.

Neat!

Not the end of the story.

Before I got to Monterey, Dave and I were on our way to the airport and we happened to be discussing other towns nearby that maybe one day we should visit. I know he has been to Huntsville AL and there is so much there to see with the Space Center and all, and I said I knew someone from IL that had moved back there about 8 years ago, Colleen Kay. We had been pals in two art quilt groups (at least 2) and I always thought highly of her and her work but had lost touch.

OK back to Monterey. Joann (are you following still, I know how complicated this sounds) comes up to me and says: "You know who is looking to move to Chattanooga? Colleen Kay. She was involved with the Artist Relocation Program there, and is still selling her art in some show up there".

You could have knocked me over with a feather. Klunk. I was so happy to hear of this strange coincidence, and so Joann called Colleen on her cell while I was finishing up my stuff at the lecture and we chatted and decided to connect when I got back here.

So long story short, Colleen has a booth at Chattanooga Market selling her art quilts and we got to reunite after all these years and catch up on all the stuff we have been doing.

She is making really nice things, with a wine theme! My kinda gal.

Notice the excellent quilting of grape leaves in this piece.
So imagine how happy I am that after only five days of retirement I have found Colleen to connect me to the art scene here in Chattanooga, and to be my near-ish friend. She still lives in Huntsville, but comes to Chattanooga every Sunday for this show.
Reminds me of an old Girl Scout song:
Make new friends but keep the old,
One is Silver and the other Gold.
So on my way home I called Frieda on my cell phone. She is taking my place in Connecticut this weekend. Best Wishes on that trip Frieda.

  1. Colleen used to drive from Alabama all the way to the suburbs of ATL to take part in our short-lived group Fiber Fandango. It was always a treat to see her and experience her work in person! Waving to Colleen[^^^]

I have to tell you - the older you get the smaller the world gets!
    I've got many many stories.
Glad to see what Colleen is up to.
I've enjoyed following her fiber art journey.
