A Fine Mess

Laura, Frieda, Anne Lullie and I were on our way to the American Craft Expo at Northwestern University in Evanston IL yesterday when this lovely young thing pulled out in front of us.

She is calling her dad, and had him look for her insurance card while we waited for the police to arrive. I had to blog this of course.
No one was hurt but her Volvo.

The girls took advantage of the lull in our art expedition to help Laura wind thread.

Many hands make short work.

The police arrived and we all had to go to the station to fill out forms. There were no cute cops involved in this incident. They're only on TV I guess.

And then we went to Panera for lunch.
My car has a bit of boo boo, and it will have to be fixed, but the real excitement came at the ACE show. The art is so fantastic, and it includes wood, ceramics, jewelry, glass, metal, book arts, garments, and fiber.
We saw Martha Fieber who does amazing hand embroidery, (her link works now) and Renee Harris our pal who makes wonderful felt and embroidered compositions, and Susan Hill who finally has a wonderful website of her very interesting fabric collage pieces combining her hand woven fabrics and hand and machine embroidery.

Most of the fiber in the show was framed, or presented as wall pieces, hung from dowels or displayed in boxes. No quilting to speak of, but then there has been some in past years.

The time consuming aspect of the fiber work coincides with my own feelings of wanting to take a bit more time in the process, so when I came home I cut hundreds of small bits of silk for use in the diptych I am making.

And now to have my car fixed...

  1. I like how everybody is smiling in all of the pictures. I don't think I would have been able to be quite as calm and pleasant.

  5. My brand new Lexus got sideswiped by a woman running a red light on my way to PIQF 3 years ago. I didn't see my car for 2 months and never made it to the showl You were lucky! She was lucky to be in a Volvo.

I'm looking forward to seeing your sloooow work.

  6. I can't believe you are all smiling.

Some idiot ran a red light and mashed our minivan last winter, and I was SERIOUSLY annoyed. I would have been even more annoyed if I'd known we wouldn't get the van back for 5 weeks AND the replacement door just isn't quite right...............

    Sigh.

    Glad you are all ok!

And glad you had the energy and will to go on to the show and that you found some excellent things there to look at! We just went home after we were mashed (rather than out to dinner as we had planned). But then our van really didn't want to be driven (front wheel compromised by the crash).

Mel...sorry to hear about your accident...fortunately nobody was hurt and that is the main thing. Sounds like a great day had by all in the end and that is what counts. Your car will be fixed in no time...right? Will you have to use Dave's baby now? Or will he have to play "Driving Miss Mel" and take you anywhere your heart desires. Good luck with the repairs.

  11. So glad nobody was hurt! You were lucky to have good friends with you, AND something worthwhile to do while you were waiting. If only there could have been a cute cop or two. Your cute cop comment reminded me of the fire at our house a few months ago, after getting a phone call about it, my daughter and I rushed home and were so upset that we only realized the next day that (because it was a hot day and it took so long to find the fire in one of the attics) there had been a bunch of hot, sweaty firemen stripping down on our lawn (not completely, of course)...and we didn't get ONE pic between us.... that blog would have gotten a few hits!

  12. Wow, what a day! Not the typical that you would want to repeat! Glad no one was hurt and you "soothed" your day at the show!
