Ploughing Along with Red

I spent yesterday with Frank Sinatra on my mp3 player and Big Red. Stitching in the ditch is so boring, and I neglected to arm myself with a book on tape to while away the hours. I must remedy that today.

In order to get any contrast to show the stitching here, I had to turn off the lights and aim the camera into a shadow. RED does not show up quilting very well.

Pale stuff works better. I have now added very pale threads to my collection for all those neutrals in my future quilting days.

I am showing multiple pictures of the quilting, to amplify the utter boring nature of doing this all day and facing doing it again all day today.

My machine and the thread set-up on the adjacent step stool .
This machine is the Janome 6500 and it works just great. Since my quilt is fused to the batting, I can stitch in the ditch with feed dogs up and then later drop them for the free motion stuff.
Gosh, this post is so boring.

The big black wall where Big Red will rest while I tackle Big Green on the other wall. Yawn. I am so excited.

  1. I know...don't you just hate it when you actucally have to finish the quilt instead of just talking about working. I fall into the latter myself...so uch easier to talk. I still think it is totally unfair that they make us finish these things before we enter them.Just think how beautful they would be gently blowing in the wind, unquilted.

    Mel,

I just love your quilting! Big Red is looking rather yummy.

I took a machine quilting class from you at Mid Atlantic and I still can't get it. But I must say that I don't practice nearly enough.

I must give you a stand ovation because your quilting is beautifully controlled!

  3. One quilter's boring is another's excitement :) I loved seeing your quilting designs. Like Vikki said it appears very controlled and intentional...something I haven't begun to grasp.

This post is just what I needed today, Melody, so please keep posting whatever comes to mind and ignore your inner critic.

  5. I loved the post. All of us that can't free motion are green with envy. I would so love to be able to do that and if you were a true friend you would get in your car, come to my house and not leave until I have mastered it. So there!!!!

  6. Melody - check out your local library and see if they have audio books that you can download and then load on your MP3 player. They're free and you check them out for the normal lending period. It's very cool.

I WISH I could machine quilt well enough that it was boring. But you already know that I am in awe of your abilities. So, I have a technical question. When you say that you have feed dogs up for stitching in the ditch, are you also using the free motion/darning foot, or do you switch from a walking foot or standard foot too? I've always assumed feed dogs up=walking foot and feed dogs down=free motion foot. Then again, we all know what happens when one assumes!
