A Well Balanced Life

While Dave and I were at the weekend quilting retreat, I blissfully remarked
"This is so much fun. Why don't we do this more often? What am I saying, we never do this!"
He said joking, " Yup, and it's all your fault."

It's true. We don't spend time together having fun and it is my fault. I just assume he will go places and do things with his motorcycle friends, not me, and I will enjoy my quilt friends, sans Dave. It has always worked this way and I thought it made for a happy arrangement.

Who knew we could have fun TOGETHER. So you are thinking what kind of wierd marriage do they have? Yeah, well, it is kinda on the wierd side, but we like it. Or I thought we did.

But really I never plan any getaways with Dave and when we have talked about stuff like this before, we just talk ourselves out of it. I keep thinking I should be finishing work or projects or stuff and really can't afford to take the time off, and he just goes along with that.

But if there is a girlfriends event, I manage to schedule my work around it and leave without feeling like I should have stayed home and kept nose to the grindstone. Shouldn't or couldn't I do the same with Dave? I think so!

And because of our schedules we don't have to go away on the weekends, when things tend to be more crowded, we can go midweek. This is sounding better and better.

What's funny is, I would never have even considered doing a weekend in central Illinois. At a waterpark. With a Rustic Decor, complete with ubiquitous taxidermy and a huge talking bear in the lobby. NOT my idea of weekend luxury. But it was hysterical fun. That shows you how little I know.

I should say that the rotten cats behaved themselves while we were gone and don't seem to care that we are back. This is good.

So where shall we go next? I am open to suggestions, and it needn't be a driving trip (altho He liked that part a lot).

  1. Mel,

What could be a nice driving trip from Western Chicago... We spent a few days up in Galena, Ill. this past summer. The home of US Grant... it's a charming place to visit... with a couple small museums, and several streets of "old main street" to walk on and shop along. We stayed outside of town (in a Ramada?) with wifi and a huge pool.

And there is a very nice state park nearby. Perfect place to get close to fall color.

Perfect short trip for you guys.

  2. You and Dave aren't alone...Roger and I do the same thing. We manage to arrange to do stuff with others, or as a family, but never quite get around to taking time for just the two of us. We vowed we weren't going to be one of those couples that abandoned all couple stuff once we had a child, but it's harder to avoid than we thought. Thanks for the reminder. And how nice that, upon Dave's retirement, you're finding you still enjoy doing stuff with him! I'm so happy to hear how much he's smiling these days!

I have to extoll the virtues of Germany again as a travel destination. Rent a BMW at Frankfurt airport and see a bunch of castles and drink local wines as you drive along the Rhein river to Cologne. Among it's many sites, Cologne has a chocolate museum with free samples and a SUPER gift shop. Visit a small shop a little north of there that holds workshops in traditional eastern european "blau druck" indigo dying. Then you can drive (really fast) to Heidelberg (because that's my current home town) and see another castle and enjoy diet busting german food. My TS&WBH (tech support and world's greatest husband) says you must then drive (again, really fast) to Munich (land of beer and BMWs), or at least Stuttgart to the Mercedes museum, and back via Lake Constance. Hmmm, castles, chocolate, fast cars, good beer and wine--what's not to like?
    Cheers

  4. My little sister recently moved to Asheville, North Carolina and my boyfriend and I went to visit her for a weekend, what a beautiful place! and the people are so genuinely friendly!!!

Ok, so it is about a 10 hour drive from Michigan... but SO worth it!!! I read an article online from The Traveling Quilter about Asheville, you can probably find it on Google, it lists all kinds of quilter destinations and great food recommendations. I recommend Earth Guild and a neat little yarn shop in Grove Arcade with lots of hand spun and hand dyed yarns from local spinners.

  5. I can highly recommend Virginia. Sounds like you guys would have a blast at Busch Gardens. Alternately, you could make that drive down to Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Another great spot is Toronto. They've got a fantastic textile museum there. If you can hit it the weekend they have the big craft and needlework show, you're all set.
