Knitting Content

You may recall that I took a cake of blue Curlylocks yarn with me to Maine and decided that I would leave the remaining cake home, since I really didn't think I would get that far knitting a humongous shawl. HA! I used it all up and was OUT OF YARN for my trip home.

Half finished shawl

It turned out that my hostess Mary Ellen has a part time job at a quilt store Quilt Essentials, and they also carry yarn. Mary Ellen is a great knitter and UNDERSTANDS that one cannot travel on a plane without handwork, so she was so excited to take me to her store.

I found some absolutely luscious hand dyed kid mohair and wool from Done Roving in Painted Desert and mated that with some green-teal Araucana and started right in on my fave diamond patches.

I had to buy some 7 bamboo circulars, o well, and they had a half price sale on six balls of Mondial Gold, 80% wool and 20% cashmere, in Fucshia yet!!!

Could I be more happy?

I haven't figured out what to make from the Mondial and will gladly accept suggestions. I think the yardage is 175m per ball and they suggest size 4-4.5mm needles, but that seems rather large. I will have to investigate online.
Investigation provided these clues:
Mondial Cashmere Gold Fibre Content: 80% Extrafine Merino Wool/ 20% Cashmere Made In: Italy
Care: Hand Wash/ Dry Flat
Gauge: 29-30 st/4 inches on 3 - 3.5 mm (US 3-4)50g (1.75 oz) ball Yardage: 175m (192 yds)

Later in unpacking my clothes I wandered into the library (yarn storage site) and lo and behold I find four balls of Merino 2000 Print, same feel, same gauge and nearly the same pink in the two of the balls as in my fucshia Mondial yarn.

The yardage is slightly less, 160 meters, but I think I have enough yarn here for something darling for the summer. Yummamente!

Now back to yesterday's story:

I was very happy to be knitting in an airplane again, unaware that an emotional upset was about to occur.
...Waiting for me at O'Hare, was my brother and Rose who usually pick me up in my car and then I take them back to his house and I go home.
Not this day... They broke up and while it was destiny, I am really, really sad. Rose is such a fabulously sweet and beautiful girl and I really love her. I love my brother too, but their relationship was always off kilter and while Rose and I had BIG HOPES, they never did approach reality.
I feel like I have lost a friend, and I don't have enough to lose.

The Beautiful Rose on a happier day

My brother already has another girlfriend, and I am sure she will be totally in love with him too, like Rose. Hope springs eternal with these new girlfriends, but mine is a little dented.

Rose is lovely. Sigh....so much for fairy tale endings. Men can be such dorks.....

The yarn is lovely....don't get me started...I still need to buy the beads to make up my kits for Ferry Beach.

  2. So sad about Rose. Does she like fibers?

Luscious colors. Did you invent the pattern for the blue curlylocks shawl?

  3. I REALLY want to learn to knit. I have been reading the yarn bloggers and they are all so interesting and the socks are so tempting. I'm tired of crocheting scarves and we can't haul our quilts around with us so easily.

And how sad about Rose. My ex-sister-in-law is one of my closest friends. She even moved within a mile of me after I divorced her brother. We rarely have a reason to discuss her brother and have a friendship that I would never want to be without. I wouldn't have met Townsend without her! So, perhaps you too can still be friends without the middle man.

  4. That's too bad about Rose. It's hard when you become friends with the girlfriend and they break up. It's like everyone else is a hollow replacement and you don't really want to try w/the new ones.

I like the knitting with the striped diamond pattern.

  5. When I first opened the page and the unfinished shawl popped up, I thought

"Holy Cow, she's knitting a beard!"

I wanted to thank you for your Lazy Dyer link. Anything to make the process easier and less "chemically" and we got some great results. I am STILL ironing....

Not sure if you have seen this at all, but I thought I would share in case you hadn't. I recently purchased some wonderful yarns in wool, mohair, and silk, that are READY TO DYE!!! So now, I can match yarn when I dye fabric. The dyes are slightly different, but I have already experimented with KoolAid dyeing as a lead in to acid dyeing, and my test length turned out well. So, if you're interested (I'm imagining brightly colored yarn hanging around your drying shelves), try out TheWoolPeddler.com. Yippee! More ways to spend money & still need to dye for color!
